The upcoming series Blade Runner 2099 will premiere on November 25 on Prime Video, featuring eight episodes. The announcement was made during the New York Comic Con on October 10. The series is inspired by the works of Philip K. Dick and directed by Ridley Scott, showcasing a dark and visually striking narrative.

Blade Runner 2099 follows the character Cora, played by Hunter Schafer, who is a fugitive assuming a new identity as a Blade Runner. She teams up with Olwen, portrayed by Michelle Yeoh, a Replicant facing programmed obsolescence. Together, they must hunt a fugitive holding a secret that could lead to the collapse of their city.

The series is included in the Amazon Prime subscription, which costs 6.99 euros per month or 69.90 euros annually. Since April 2024, the subscription has included advertising by default, with an option to pay an additional 1.99 euros monthly for an ad-free experience.

The production has reportedly received substantial funding from Amazon, indicating a commitment to delivering a high-quality show that upholds the franchise's legacy. The involvement of Ridley Scott and co-writer Michael Green raises expectations for the series, especially following the mixed reception of Blade Runner 2049 at the box office.

While the previous film had a production budget of approximately 150 to 185 million dollars, Blade Runner 2099 aims to prove itself as more than a mere extension of the franchise. It seeks to retain the melancholic poetry and darkness that characterized the original while avoiding generic special effects. The series is poised to test whether the Blade Runner franchise can maintain its artistic integrity in a landscape of recycled classics.
