Apple develops a smart home camera utilizing artificial intelligence without video recording
Apple is developing a new smart home security camera that relies on artificial intelligence to analyze activities inside and around the home, without recording video clips for users to view or store, according to a recent report.
Mark Gurman, a journalist specializing in Apple news, revealed during the first episode of the podcast “Power On,” broadcast by Bloomberg, that the camera is internally named “J450” and may be part of a new smart home system that Apple is developing, alongside a smart home display that the company is rumored to be preparing for launch.
The camera features a small cylindrical design resembling a cosmetics container, with an extremely low frame rate that prevents it from capturing continuous video. Instead of recording images, it uses a sensor and artificial intelligence to directly analyze the surrounding environment.
The camera is expected to conduct its analysis on-device, meaning there is no need to send images to external servers for storage or processing. This technology can detect events within the home, such as a person entering a room, utilizing a facial recognition feature.
Users will not receive visual recordings; the system's outputs are limited to textual descriptions of the events detected by the camera, without allowing video viewing or saving.
This technology is similar to one that Apple is said to be developing for AirPods equipped with cameras, details of which surfaced in earlier leaks this year.
Apple is currently expanding its smart home ecosystem, with reports indicating that it is preparing to launch a smart home control center. The new camera may be part of this system, focusing on local data processing and reducing the need for storing visual recordings.
