R+ VC invests in Principal Mineral to rebuild critical supply chains for advanced electronics and defense systems
Principal Mineral has secured approximately 280 million USD in a Series A funding round led by Overmatch Ventures and The New Industrial Corporation, with participation from J2 Ventures and Ensemble VC. The company focuses on restoring a missing link in the supply chain between raw material access and the production of advanced technologies. This gap involves creating highly processed materials essential for electronics, defense systems, AI infrastructure, telecommunications, and aerospace industries.
Principal Mineral targets the supply chain for materials used in printed circuit boards (PCBs), which form the foundation of nearly every modern electronic system. These systems range from data centers and smartphones to satellites, radars, missile systems, and autonomous platforms. Over the past decades, much of the production of materials needed for PCBs has shifted from the United States and Europe to Asia, creating a concentration of manufacturing that has become a significant risk point for Western supply chains, particularly in sectors tied to national security and advanced technologies. While Principal Mineral’s model leans more toward private equity than traditional venture capital, the investment aligns with R+’s core thesis of rebuilding strategic industrial capacity and Western supply chains critical for defense, dual-use, and deep technology sectors.
The company’s approach differs from typical startup models by focusing on identifying existing industrial assets, acquiring them, modernizing facilities, and scaling production capacity. In 2025, Principal Mineral acquired and restarted the Camden Copper plant in South Carolina, the only facility in North America producing electrodeposited copper foil—a key component in PCBs used in electronics and defense systems. In June 2026, the company acquired Isola Group, a global producer of high-performance copper-clad laminates and prepreg materials essential for advanced PCB manufacturing. Most recently, in August 2026, Principal Mineral acquired Conductive Group, a manufacturer of advanced conductive materials, composites, and solutions designed to protect electronics from electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference. The funding will support integrating these acquisitions, expanding production capacity, advancing technology, and pursuing further investments across North America, Europe, and Asia.
The issue Principal Mineral addresses extends beyond the United States. The war in Ukraine, the expansion of AI infrastructure, and rising geopolitical tensions have highlighted the importance of controlling not only the final products but also the entire production chain—from raw materials and components to finished systems. Europe, in particular, has long prioritized designing cutting-edge technologies while outsourcing much of their physical production outside the West. Today, technological security requires more than advanced software, chips, or defense systems; it also demands control over the materials that make these systems possible. Principal Mineral is rebuilding precisely the industrial layer that Western economies have been losing for decades, according to Mateusz Bodio, founder of R+VC and RKKVC.
R+VC’s investment in Principal Mineral reflects its broader strategy of supporting companies developing technologies and infrastructure critical to the security, industrial resilience, and strategic autonomy of Western economies. The fund views defense and dual-use sectors through a wider lens, emphasizing the need to rebuild physical industrial infrastructure and supply chains that enable scaling of technologies such as satellites, drones, autonomous systems, data centers, and advanced defense platforms. Without control over the materials and components several layers down in the supply chain, much of the new technological economy cannot function effectively, Bodio noted.
