Anthropic recorded an accounting loss of 80 billion dollars for the first half of 2026. This figure was revealed in an unconfirmed filing document, which is part of the company's preparations for an initial public offering (IPO). The Wall Street Journal cited details from the draft S-1 filing that has not yet been made public.

The anticipated loss results from adjustments in accounting methods related to revenue and expenses. For the first half of this year, Anthropic reported revenues of 16.3 billion dollars, with one-fifth of that revenue coming from just two major clients. The processing resource expenses during this period were approximately 9 billion dollars.

Furthermore, the document outlines significant future processing resource needs, estimating that Anthropic will require up to 750 billion dollars over the next 7 to 10 years. This includes cloud services from major providers such as Google Cloud, AWS, and Microsoft, as well as chip rentals from NVIDIA through AI data center service providers like Nscale or Lambda. The company also indicated its willingness to explore GPU procurement from alternative providers in the future.

Lastly, Anthropic acknowledged risks in the filing document, particularly the potential for AI model failures or uncontrollable behaviors, which could lead to severe consequences for the company. They noted the possibility of facing substantial lawsuits for damages, while also mentioning difficulties in finding insurance coverage to protect against such risks. The Wall Street Journal reported the story.
