Anthropic prohibits use of Claude for creating false search sources and AI responses
Anthropic, the developer of the AI assistant Claude, has published updated usage rules for its service. These rules explicitly prohibit the creation of websites using Claude that pose as independent sources to influence search engine responses and AI. The new policy will take effect on November 12, 2026.
Indicators of misleading campaigns include fake accounts, organizations, media, and reviews, undisclosed payments for publications, and the dissemination of a single message through related platforms. A separate point addresses the content of sources relied upon by search engines and generative models, particularly materials with false attribution or claims of independence.
For professionals in SEO, SERM, and GERM, the boundary of the prohibition is significant. Anthropic regulates the use of its own products, including Claude and its API. This does not imply that search engines have altered their ranking algorithms or that there are mechanisms that automatically detect such networks of sites.
Anthropic clarifies that restrictions existed previously but were scattered among sections on fraud, disinformation, and elections. Now, the company has consolidated them into a separate category that encompasses both political and commercial campaigns. Therefore, this is not about banning ordinary content automation, but about cases of intentional distortion of the source of content and the scale of dissemination.
The main conclusion for promotion through generative search is narrow: using Claude to mimic pseudo-independent confirmations is now explicitly stated as a violation of the platform's rules. The announcement does not disclose how frequently and in what manner the provider will identify such cases.
