Anthropic reports over 80 billion USD net loss in first half of the year
Anthropic announced a net loss exceeding 80 billion USD for the first half of the year, according to a media report citing a draft IPO prospectus. The company indicated that it may invest up to 750 billion USD in the coming years to secure additional computing power.
This loss represents a significant increase from the 13 billion USD reported during the same period last year, largely attributed to 72 billion USD in accounting expenses related to changes in the value of financial instruments issued by Anthropic to raise funds.
The data highlights the high costs associated with the artificial intelligence race, while investors are becoming increasingly cautious in assessing whether significant investments in chips and data centers will yield corresponding returns.
In the first half of the year, Anthropic's revenue surged from 1.1 billion USD to 16.3 billion USD compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, its spending on AI infrastructure grew nearly fourfold, reaching close to 9 billion USD.
The company has benefited from the widespread use of its programming assistant, “Claude Code,” which developers utilize to write software and build applications.
However, multiple insiders revealed that after participating in Anthropic's investor day event last week, some existing and potential investors began to consider lowering the company's valuation after reviewing its latest financial disclosures. Investors discussed a valuation of approximately 1.5 trillion USD during the event in San Francisco, a significant drop from the previously expected valuation of about 2 trillion USD for the company's shares sale in November.
Anthropic disclosed to investors that its revenue for the third quarter increased by 45% compared to the previous quarter, reaching 16.8 billion USD. Additionally, the company reported adjusted profitability for that quarter.
If Anthropic's IPO receives lukewarm responses, it may negatively impact the entire AI market. With competitor OpenAI potentially going public next year, investors widely believe that the recent outlook for the AI market largely depends on the success of Anthropic's share sale. The outlet cnBeta reported the story.
