According to a report shared by The Wall Street Journal, the AI giant has acquired Glass Imaging, a venture that develops smartphone camera technologies. This acquisition is noted to be valued at 300 million dollars. Founded in 2019 in Los Altos, California, Glass Imaging had raised approximately 30 million dollars from investors to date. The company was established by those who developed Apple's portrait mode. The integration of Glass Imaging into OpenAI highlights that artificial intelligence is not limited to text or voice but is being directly integrated into optical and imaging systems.

The co-founders of Glass Imaging, Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, are well-known figures in the tech world. The duo, former Apple engineers, previously led the team that developed the iconic Portrait Mode feature for iPhones at the Cupertino-based tech giant. Their extensive background has directly influenced the work conducted at Glass Imaging. The company utilizes artificial intelligence not for post-processing or editing photographs, but to overcome the physical size limitations of camera systems at the moment of capture. The system learns the optical characteristics of various smartphone models through deep neural networks, ensuring the optimal and highest quality image is achieved at the moment the shutter is pressed.

While OpenAI has not yet made an official statement regarding this move, it aligns perfectly with the company's long-discussed hardware plans. Industry speculations suggest that the AI giant is working on smartphones, smart headphones, and portable AI assistant devices without screens.
