Apple launches iPhone Duo featuring hidden FaceTime camera

Apple has introduced the FaceTime camera concealed beneath the internal display of its new foldable iPhone Duo. However, the company has not disclosed the sensor's resolution, which deviates from its usual practice regarding the other cameras on the device. The integrated camera is located under the main 7.6-inch display and supports features such as Center Stage for video calls, an aperture of f/1.8, enhanced video stabilization, and video recording at up to 1080p at a rate of 60 frames per second, alongside features like Animoji, Memoji, rotation, zoom options, wind noise reduction, and improved audio quality.

Unlike the other cameras in the device, which include a 48-megapixel rear camera and a 12-megapixel external front camera, Apple has not revealed the resolution of this under-display camera. The specifications indicate that it can only capture 1080p video, suggesting the sensor resolution is at least 2 megapixels, while its inability to support 4K suggests it is less than 8 megapixels. Without official clarifications from Apple, it is likely that the actual resolution is lower than that. Some tests have noted that the glass layer above the camera lacks the anti-reflective nano-texture coating present in other parts of the display, causing a shiny or rotating spot depending on the lighting angle, a detail Apple did not hide in its promotional images.

However, the camera's position remains more visible than some expected based on the lighting, a challenge previously faced by other companies like Samsung when developing integrated camera technologies. A first look at the completely new Apple iPhone Duo shows that pre-orders will start on October 16, with official availability set for October 23.
