Apple has acquired Samplab, an AI audio startup, in a deal that was disclosed in a notice published by the European Commission. The acquisition was completed in June and was not announced publicly beforehand. Samplab developed a desktop application and plugins that allowed musicians to edit recorded audio in detailed ways. Its technology could convert audio recordings into MIDI data, identify chords and instruments, and separate individual components such as vocals and drums from multi‑track recordings. A key feature was the ability to modify individual notes in a complex recording without altering the original timbre of the sound.

This capability could let users make precise harmonic adjustments while preserving the natural character of the original performance. Apple said it plans to integrate the acquired technology into its professional music creation software Logic Pro and the consumer‑oriented GarageBand. The integration could expand the editing functions available to users of those applications, especially for tasks that involve multi‑track audio. However, Apple has not yet provided a timeline for when the features will be released or which specific functions will appear in which products. The European Commission filing also confirmed that Apple purchased certain assets of Samplab and hired some of its employees.

The notice indicated that the transaction involved specific technologies and staff rather than the entire company. After the acquisition, Samplab ceased operating as an independent service and its website now redirects to Apple’s official site. The integration of Samplab’s technology into Apple’s ecosystem may enhance the company’s offerings for music creators, but the full scope of the rollout remains unclear.
