Apple is developing a screenless health and fitness tracker similar to Whoop

Apple is developing a health and fitness tracking device without a screen, resembling the wrist-worn device from Whoop. The company is currently working on prototypes after conducting market research for several months, but has not yet decided whether to release the device for sale.

Following the news, shares of Garmin dropped by 2.5%, while Apple’s shares increased by approximately 1%, reaching a level of 342.29 United States dollars.

The prototype being developed is a thin fabric strap equipped with sensors and a processing chip, but it lacks a display, differentiating it from the Apple Watch, which features a display, applications, and notifications. If Apple proceeds with production, the device is expected to be launched no earlier than 2028.

The project has garnered interest from both Tim Cook and Eddy Cue, who oversees the Services business and recently took charge of Apple’s health initiatives at the end of last year. Eddy Cue has emphasized the need for the Health team to study and consider the strategies of competitors like Whoop and Oura more closely.

One reason for this is the rapid growth of Whoop and Oura, with both brands boasting millions of users. Whoop has an estimated valuation of around 10 billion United States dollars and is considering an initial public offering (IPO), while Oura recently filed for an IPO this month.

Apple has also begun incorporating similar features into the Apple Watch and Health app, such as more detailed heart rate tracking, daily readiness assessments, and biological age evaluations based on health data, along with a revamped Health app for improved usability.

In addition to this project, the team developing Vision Pro is also involved in the initial development of this device and is working on other wearable devices, including smart glasses and AirPods with cameras. Moreover, the Apple Watch is preparing for a significant redesign, with a new model potentially launching as early as late 2027.
