Xbox introduces feature to convert physical game rights into digital ownership

Xbox has launched a new feature that allows users to convert ownership rights of physical games into digital copies. The announcement follows earlier speculation about the service. Users can insert a supported game disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console, start the game, and claim the digital entitlement. The feature supports Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, enabling play on PC and via cloud streaming. The digital entitlement acts as an additional right alongside the physical disc, meaning the disc can still be used as before. The feature will be available to Xbox Insider testers starting next week.

The conversion process applies only to discs for Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles, not to discs for earlier Xbox or Xbox 360 systems. Microsoft explained that each supported disc contains a unique identifier tied to the owner’s account, which prevents the feature from working with older discs. The company stated that thousands of titles will be supported initially, though it did not provide a specific list of games. Additional titles will be added over time as they become available.

Microsoft emphasized that the digital entitlement functions identically to a game purchased through digital channels. This includes access to cloud gaming and cross-platform play where supported. Ownership of the digital copy can be transferred to another account if the physical disc is claimed on a different console, with the original owner’s rights removed. The feature aims to preserve the value of physical collections by allowing users to retain access digitally.

The rollout begins with Xbox Insider testers, who will have early access to the feature starting next week. Microsoft did not specify a timeline for a broader public release beyond the testing phase.
