United States Arrests Man Accused of Smuggling AI Servers Worth 300 Million Dollar to China
United States authorities have arrested a 38-year-old man suspected of smuggling AI servers valued at 300 million dollar to China. The seized servers contained high-performance Nvidia GPU units that fall under US export restrictions.
The Justice Department alleges that the suspect used his company to purchase the equipment and then shipped it through Malaysia and Singapore to China, violating US export laws.
According to officials, false documentation claimed the hardware was destined for permitted end users and countries exempt from licensing requirements.
The suspect also received more than 176 million dollar from two Malaysian logistics firms, and authorities say the servers ultimately reached the Chinese government.
Among the hardware were Nvidia A100 and H100 GPUs, chips designed for heavy AI computations and used for training advanced AI models.
The US government warns that such GPUs can enhance military capabilities of other nations, which is why they are subject to strict export controls.
Washington has imposed increasingly stringent restrictions on AI chip exports to China for several years, aiming to block Beijing’s access to the most advanced US technology.
The man faces charges of conspiracy, money laundering and illegal export, each carrying a maximum prison term of twenty, twenty and ten years respectively.
