NVIDIA CEO Calls for Regulation of AI Companies Without Antitrust Exemptions

NVIDIA's CEO has stated that artificial intelligence companies should not receive exemptions from antitrust laws or liability laws. In a nearly two-hour interview broadcast on a podcast, he discussed the recent acquisition of Hugging Face by NVIDIA for 13 billion USD and the implications for AI regulation.

The CEO has consistently opposed comprehensive regulations on AI safety, even as labs like OpenAI and Anthropic have called for such oversight. He reiterated that AI labs are responsible for testing their products and should only release them when they are confident in the models' safety.

According to transcripts released by The New York Times, the CEO remarked, "However, given the complexity of their work, it does not make sense to request antitrust or product liability exemptions when asking for regulation. When you ask for regulation, you should not ask for exemptions from existing regulatory requirements."

Anthropic's CEO recently advocated for antitrust exemptions for AI labs to allow collaboration on AI safety issues. Some U.S. officials, including the Treasury Secretary, have indicated that AI companies are seeking liability exemptions, although they did not specify which companies.

In other parts of the interview, the CEO expressed support for regulatory measures specific to AI applications, such as autonomous vehicles. He noted that cars, especially self-driving taxis, are already subject to significant regulation and suggested that if there are regulatory gaps, further measures should be taken.
