Betagro Acquires Majority Stake in Freshket to Expand FoodTech Ecosystem
Betagro has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Freshket, a Thai online platform for food ingredient distribution. The investment was executed through Betagro Ventures, marking a strategic move to expand Betagro's FoodTech operations and strengthen its Foodservice business with digital distribution channels. Techsauce reported the story.
The partnership combines Betagro's international-standard food production capabilities and logistics network with Freshket's platform technology and distribution infrastructure. This integration aims to expand e-commerce channels for fresh and processed food products, specifically targeting the HORECA sector, which includes hotels, restaurants, and catering businesses. The product range covered by this expansion includes meat, fresh vegetables and fruits, dry goods, and frozen foods.
Freshket operates as an online distribution platform for HORECA operators in Thailand, utilizing a supply chain management system that connects farmers and producers directly with restaurants. Company data indicates that the platform currently lists over 10,000 products and serves more than 20,000 business operators. The system maintains a delivery accuracy rate exceeding 98.5%, which helps improve distribution efficiency, reduce food waste, and increase transparency throughout the supply chain.
Freshket has outlined a three-part strategy for continued business expansion. The first aspect involves increasing the portfolio of imported goods, such as seafood, premium Japanese ingredients, cheese, and butter. The second aspect focuses on expanding service areas from Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, and Khon Kaen to the metropolitan region and major provincial cities. The third aspect involves developing Cold Chain Logistics systems, or temperature-controlled transportation, to maintain product quality during delivery.
Chayathorn Taipaisitpong, President of the Agri-Industrial and New Business Group at Betagro, stated that the investment in Freshket reinforces Betagro's strategy to build a comprehensive and sustainable food ecosystem. By combining Betagro's food production expertise and logistics network with Freshket's digital platform capabilities, the company aims to rapidly and comprehensively expand access to food products for HORECA customers. This collaboration is expected to improve ingredient distribution efficiency, support cost management for operators, and enhance the competitiveness of the Thai food industry.
Ponglada Paninwetch, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Freshket, expressed enthusiasm for the business partnership with Betagro. She noted that the alliance will unlock Freshket's growth potential by ensuring stable access to high-quality upstream ingredients and efficient cost management. Leveraging Betagro's strong infrastructure and capital, Freshket aims to deliver quality ingredients at competitive prices to restaurant operators, facilitating business expansion and stable long-term growth.
Betagro stated that this collaboration reflects its commitment to driving growth through innovation and digital technology. The company aims to accelerate the development of the Thai food supply chain to make it more efficient and transparent, creating growth opportunities for farmers, producers, restaurant operators, and all sectors within the food ecosystem.
