Anthropic acquired a drug company called Mithril Medicine. The company has only one full-time employee, who is developing treatments for two rare genetic diseases. One of these treatments has shown promising results in mouse experiments. The acquisition was announced yesterday. The company's founder, Cody Tranbarger, uses a tool called Claude to coordinate 11 external laboratories, handle experimental data, and manage daily operations. The founder's name was revealed in a post on X. Anthropic did not disclose the acquisition price, but confirmed that Mithril Medicine's two drug development pipelines will become the company's first internal drug development projects. The founder of Mithril Medicine, Cody Tranbarger, has been using the pseudonym Professor Oak on X to share industry insights and observations for the past six years.

He graduated from Amherst College with degrees in biology and economics, and worked at Goldman Sachs and Casdin Capital before founding Mithril Medicine. The company's research focuses on two rare genetic diseases that affect muscle cells and their connections to surrounding tissues. One of the treatments has completed initial animal experiments, showing improved muscle strength and survival rates in treated mice. Anthropic's interest in Mithril Medicine likely stems from its unique operational model, which relies heavily on Claude for coordination and management. The founder plans to continue working on the existing drug pipelines and initiate more rare disease research projects. The fastest-moving project is expected to enter human clinical trials by the end of 2028. Anthropic has been expanding its presence in the life sciences sector, launching products and initiatives aimed at accelerating drug discovery and development.

The company has partnered with several biopharmaceutical organizations and has begun conducting its own biological research. Anthropic has also acquired other companies in the biopharmaceutical sector, including Coefficient Bio, and has established its own wet laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company's recent announcements highlight its growing involvement in drug development, from providing AI tools to pharmaceutical companies to conducting its own research and development.
