Amazon CTO Werner Vogels Discusses AI Impact on Software Development
Werner Vogels, the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Amazon, has shared his perspectives on how artificial intelligence is transforming the creation of software and organizational workflows.
Techsauce reported the story through an exclusive interview conducted during a visit to Thailand. Vogels, who joined Amazon in 2004 and became CTO in 2005, noted that while AI allows individuals to create prototypes rapidly, there is a significant difference between a prototype and a finished product.
Referring to an event in early 2026, Vogels described a scientist on the Amazon Quick team who used Kiro, an AI development tool from AWS, to build a desktop prototype for Amazon Quick in a single night. He stated that AI accelerates the process of proving whether an idea is feasible, reducing timelines from weeks or months to a single night. However, he emphasized that moving from a prototype to a product requires addressing security, cost, stability, and scalability.
Regarding product development, Vogels discussed the Working Backwards process used at Amazon, which typically begins with a simulated internal press release and frequently asked questions before prototyping. He suggested that AI may shift this sequence, allowing teams to build prototypes first to test ideas and refine requirements before finalizing documentation.
Vogels highlighted that products are intended for use by strangers, including potential malicious actors, which necessitates rigorous security. He also noted the difficulty in predicting costs for Large Language Models compared to traditional databases, as small changes in input can lead to ten-fold differences in output costs. This unpredictability poses a challenge for businesses with low margins, such as retail, and for executives reporting resource and energy consumption to boards.
