Microsoft enhances Windows 11 performance for low-end devices
Microsoft has announced improvements in the performance of its Windows 11 operating system, increasing its response speed by up to 20%. The enhancements also improve the efficiency of random access memory usage and computer resources, allowing for smoother operation especially on devices equipped with 8 gigabytes of RAM.
These improvements are part of a plan launched by the company at the beginning of 2026 aimed at developing Windows 11, focusing on performance and enhancing daily user experience after months of updates and fixes.
Navjot Virk, the company's Vice President for Windows Experiences, stated that Microsoft has improved memory management and resource efficiency, enabling a greater allocation of computer capabilities for the tasks that users are actually performing.
He added that the enhancements allow the system to keep active user data in random access memory instead of transferring it to slower storage units, with the ability to retain additional data up to 2 gigabytes in memory.
The new improvements target computers equipped with 8 gigabytes of RAM or less, as Windows 11 now delays loading interface elements that users do not need continuously, including the Widgets section, which only loads when opened.
This step allows for a savings of over 200 megabytes of random access memory for applications and other tasks, reducing the strain on limited-resource devices and improving usability.
The enhancements also include upgrades to the Start menu, File Explorer, search function, and Edge browser, in addition to improving resource management mechanisms across various parts of the system.
Microsoft has made additional adjustments to reduce the annoyance caused by Windows updates and enhance the Widgets section. It has also finally allowed users to move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen instead of being restricted to the bottom.
The company has expedited login via the Windows Hello feature and improved the reliability of pairing with external Bluetooth devices, such as AirPods.
Microsoft is preparing to expand the availability of the new search experience in Windows 11, which offers faster performance and improved capabilities for finding files and information. This experience is currently available to participants in the Windows Insider program, with a broader rollout expected before the end of 2026.
