Canadian fund invests in critical resources and plans to build a factory in Poland
Kinterra Capital has acquired approximately 44 hectares of land in Wrzoski, Opole, for around 70 million zł. The factory was originally planned to be built by an American company, but it went bankrupt. The planned factory is supported by a Polish government grant program valued at about 340 million dollars, which is approximately 1.22 billion zł. This marks Kinterra's first investment in Europe, as the private equity fund specializes in critical resources and related infrastructure. The key assets for the Opole project were transferred to the company in May of this year, and the finalization of the land acquisition occurred in July. Kinterra is currently preparing for the investment in a facility that will produce lithium-ion battery components.
Laura Fernandez, a partner at Kinterra, expressed admiration for Poland, noting the level of local scientists, the positive approach of representatives from all levels of administration, and the overall business environment. The project is currently in the pre-engineering phase, aimed at refining the technology intended for the plant. In parallel, the fund is discussing potential joint venture partners and exploring collaboration options with local research and development resources, including local universities and scientific institutions. One of the initiatives in this area is the Opole Battery Cluster, focused on connecting business, science, local government, and central administration around sector development. The completed facility is expected to start operations in 2032.
Graeme Weeks, Global Head of Project Execution at Kinterra, stated that the fund's investment mandate encompasses not only the production of critical resources but also infrastructure, indicating openness to further investments in the region. Kinterra operates as a private equity firm investing in people, concepts, critical resources, and strategic infrastructure necessary for the development of a modern economy. The company's currently managed assets amount to approximately 1.5 billion dollars. The story was reported by Business Insider PL.
